NUMBER OF PAW POINTS: 10/10 for the stunning views and ease of the walk

If you’ve ever driven along Leeds Road towards Otley or the other way approaching North Leeds, you can see a prominent rocky outcrop over towards Harrogate. It’s Almscliffe Crag.

The humans kept saying “oooh we’ll have to go there one day.” Took them eight years to take me and it’s not even far from home! Anyway we got there in the end on a beautiful day in May 2023.

The weather was not too hot and not too cold – just perfect for me. Being a long haired Jack Chi (or Jackhuahua if you prefer) I find that I struggle a bit if it’s too hot as my coat is so thick. But today was perfect.

Dad parked up and we approached the crag via a footpath across a pretty field. My humans kept me on my long lead as always as there were a few sheep around and a few kids. I love sheep (I have a friend who is a sheep called Lucy) and I love kids too but my humans have always been mindful that they may not like me and we don’t want to upset anyone.

There is a narrow entrance to the outcrop between a wall. Mum was worried she would get her bum stuck haha! She passed dad my walkies back and “elegantly” squeezed through.

The climb to the top is a lovely walk for all age groups as it’s not too steep. The views from the top on a clear day are just breathtaking and you can see where West Yorkshire and North Yorkshire meet. Plenty of photo ops for my Instagram page!

It’s a lovely place for a dog walk or to take the family for a picnic. I’ve got little legs but parts of the crag are absolutely fine for me to climb on and take in the views from the top. We didn’t find the part that we walked up too strenuous. There were some rock climbers climbing the biggest, steepest part of the Crag. We enjoyed watching them.

I loved my time there and hope I don’t have to wait another eight years before my next visit!

ENZO SUGGESTS: Roadside parking. There is a space for a few cars (maybe six or seven cars) on Crag Lane near the entrance between the wall. And wear comfy and suitable footwear. And if you’re a pooch like me, respect the sheep. It’s their home!
